What makes up a PC Platform?

A PC platform is an important component in the development of software. It has a combination of software and hardware structures that provides a framework to run the application software. A platform consists of programming languages, operating systems (ex. Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X) which is the computer’s processing coordinating program, computer structure, and graphical user interface or run time system libraries. A logic code consists of machine code, source code and bytecode. The implementation of the applications is not limited with the kind of operating systems available.

For the past years, a lot of applications needed to be written to operate on a specific platform. Every platform offered various application software interfaces for various system services. That means specific computer applications must be written to operate on operating systems (OS) like Microsoft Windows and another on Mac OS X. Even if these platform distinctions remain apparent, there are new open interfaces that enable many applications to operate on various platforms through broker or interceding application programs.

Elements of a PC Platform:

Operating Systems – it is a type of a software platform that is uploaded into your computer and it provides the main structure for all the application programs to run.

Hardware – this pertains to the physical elements that make up a computer system. like video card, hard drive, CPU, motherboard, power supply, etc.

Layers – a platform has both software and hardware elements and these components can be layered on top of each other.

Programming Language – these programming languages that are installed on the operating systems can also be considered as platforms.
